If you are in a relationship you are faced with the same question every day of your life. “Will I chose to meet my needs today or will I chose to meet my partner’s needs?” It doesn’t matter if you’re married, if you work together, if you’re family members, or if you’re just meeting someone.
Yesterday I was introduced to the Platinum Rule (sort of like the Golden Rule). “Treat others the way they want to be treated.” This shifts the focus from “this is what I want” to “let me first understand what they want and then I’ll try and give it to them.” If two people live this out every day they are guaranteed a successful relationship.
By the way, this post is a thank you to the guy who gave up his order of Teriyaki Chicken from Safeway last night so my wife could have the rest.
