Change is never easy. Un-learning years of bad behavior and poor pain management does not happen over night and never without a fight. A common sentiment I hear from my clients, usually around the 2 month mark, is that they think this process should be easier or they should not have to work so hard to make change happen. There is the false belief that if something is hard then it is somehow wrong. When these ideas emerge it becomes easier to start missing or rescheduling appointments until they somehow slip off the calendar and the work doesn’t get done.
If this scenario has happened to you you’re in good company. Make another call. Get another appointment. Start again, this time with the the understanding that this is going to be work—probably some of the hardest work you’ll ever do. Know it will cost you something. Know you won’t do it perfectly. Know that you’ll want to quit. Keep coming anyways. Eventually, you’ll find yourself in a very different place.
Did I mention that change is hard?
